William Miller: The later years
After retiring as Goodhue County (Minn.) deputy auditor, Brother enjoyed time with Alverna at their home in Old Frontenac, Minn., with many visits from his kids and grandkids. In 1985, he was diagnosed with malignant melanoma. He kept up his activities, including running several miles every day, but the cancer moved in, and he died on March 1, 1996, at his home. Here he is just a month before that, shoveling snow. Metastatic melanoma is a merciless cancer and brings a harsh death, but to the end, Brother was cheerful and kind. He and Alverna, who died April 24, 2006 in a car accident, are buried at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in St. Paul, Minn.
